| WHAT
PARENTS NEED TO KNOW
Attendance
Regular school attendance is a very important part of your child’s
education. After an absence from school, a note from a parent or
guardian is required. The note should include the date(s) the child
was absent and the reason for absence.
School
Hours
Classes begin promptly at 8:50 AM and end at 3:10 PM for all full
day students. The morning sessions begin at 8:50 AM and end at 12:00
AM and the afternoon sessions begin at 12:00 PM and end at 3:10
PM.
Tardiness
Children who are tardy must check in at the office with their parents.
An office pass is necessary for entrance into the classroom.
Dismissal
Parents and visitors must report to the office before picking up
students. No student will be dismissed without first checking with
the office. A note or phone call informing the school personnel
of an early dismissal is mandatory. If a person other than the parent/guardian
is picking up the child, please name him/her in the note. Identification
will be checked.
Lunch and Snack
The school provides lunch, the price of which is determined yearly.
A short snack time is provided. Please send in a small, healthy
snack. Milk can be purchased at lunch, and for snack time.
Dress
Regulations
As noted in School Committee Policy 5.1, students have a responsibility
to dress appropriately for school. Clothing that may be a safety
hazard such as loose fitting sandals are discouraged. During the
winter months, students are required to bring shoes or sneakers
to wear so that boots are not worn all day long. Shoes or sneakers
must be worn at all times. Students are not allowed to wear caps
or hats in the building.
Early
Release Days
Early Release days may be scheduled throughout the year for Curriculum
Development and Staff Workshops. These days are identified on the
school calendar. On these days, all students will be dismissed at
11:30 AM. There is no afternoon Kindergarten or Preschool on release
days.
TiPS
– Code of Conduct
A committee made up of staff and parents met to put together a code
of conduct for students. The ultimate goal of the “TiPS for
Success” is to outline expectations and create school-wide
discipline that is fair and consistent. Please review this document
with your child.
Resources
for Parents
Parents are welcome to borrow informational booklets and reading
materials on a variety of subjects. These resources are found in
the guidance office at the Early Childhood Center. An informational
bulletin board can be found in the front of the lobby for parents.
School
Photos
In the fall, photographs of each child are taken for our files.
Parents have the option of purchasing a number of different photo
packages. Class pictures are also available. A more casual photograph
of students is taken in the spring for those parents who are interested.
Bus/Van
Safety
- Children will not approach a bus until it has come to a full and
complete stop. The bus driver will indicate when to board the bus.
- Children will walk no closer than ten (10) feet around the bus,
but never behind the bus.
- Children will remain in their seats while the bus is in motion.
- Children will be safe and quiet on the bus to ensure the driver’s
ability to hear necessary traffic noise.
Delayed
Opening
It is the policy of the Tyngsborough School Committee to be in session
unless road conditions are too hazardous for the buses to travel
safely. The School Committee has also instituted a delayed opening
rather than canceling an entire day. Whenever there is a delayed
opening, there will be no AM Kindergarten or AM Preschool classes.
Full day programs and PM classes will be in session. In the event
of inclement weather, the start of school may be delayed by one
to two hours. With a one-hour delay students will start at 9:50
AM, a 90-minute delay at 10:20 AM and a two-hour delay at 10:50
AM. Students who attend the morning Preschool and Kindergarten classes
do not have school on delayed openings.
No
School
Announcement can be heard on radio station WBZ Boston (1030 AM)
or local television news stations. Parents are encouraged to listen
for the announcements rather than calling the school or the police
department.
Emergency
Release
Parent volunteers handle a networking system to notify all interested
parents of an emergency release. In order to participate all interested
parents must complete the appropriate forms sent home on the first
day of school.
Communication
Communication between parents and staff is essential in providing
an optimum environment for children to learn and grow. Teachers
are aware of the importance of clear and meaningful feedback for
parents. Parents also have a responsibility to be partners in this
communication process. Please inform the staff of any significant
events happening at home or of any unusual eating or sleeping patterns.
Conferences may be scheduled throughout the year at mutually convenient
times regarding concerns or questions.
Individual Parent
Conferences
Individual parent conferences are scheduled once during the school
year usually after the second marking term. Parents and teachers
meet together to review the staff’s observations and share
ideas. Parents are encouraged to attend these conferences. Information
regarding these conferences is relayed through the newsletter. Parents
and teachers may request additional conferences at any time during
the year.
Information
Forums for Parents
Parents of in-coming Preschool or Kindergarten students are invited
to meet with the classroom teacher during one of the first two days
of school each August.
In January, the ECC Fair provides parents with informational sessions
on a variety of topics. Community providers also attend this fair
to provide information on their programs for young children.
In the spring an information night is provided for parents of prospective
Transition students. In early June all kindergartners will take
a tour of the Tyngsborough Elementary School and visit a first grade
classroom. Information regarding
dates and times is relayed in the newsletter.
Newsletter
A monthly newsletter is sent home with your child detailing specific
events and building-wide activities. Information from each grade
is provided on a rotating basis. A calendar specifying school related
events as well as a lunch menu is attached to the newsletter.

PTO that provides numerous programs throughout the school year,
including arts and enrichment programs, assemblies, and field trips.
Your support is needed to maintain a successful organization. Regular
meetings are held and are listed in the monthly newsletter.
Birthdays
When observing your child's birthday with friends from his/her classroom every child in the classroom must be invited. If there are not enough invitations for every child in the classroom, they will not be handed out. Please speak with your child's classroom teacher for more information.
